The rapid adoption of private drones presents new security challenges, especially for critical infrastructure. On August 7, Sweden's busiest airport, Arlanda, was forced to halt all air traffic for an hour during the afternoon due to an unidentified drone entering the air space.

A court ruling overturns the Federal Aviation Administration's 2014 order that set new flight paths and procedures for aircraft departing Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. The 2-1 ruling Tuesday by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit agrees with claims by Phoenix and a historic neighborhood association that the FAA's action was "arbitrary and capricious."
On Aug. 28, AOPA, along with seven affected pilots, filed FAA Part 13 complaints over egregious FBO pricing practices at Illinois's Waukegan National Airport, North Carolina's Asheville Regional Airport, and Florida's Key West International Airport, on behalf of its membership. At each of these airports, a single FBO controls all transient ramp space and fuel services, which means each FBO possesses a monopoly position and significant power over access to a public airport.
The FAA continues to handle emergency and relief operations at a number of airports in the Hurricane Harvey area, including at Houston Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental. The FAA is prepared to support the resumption of commercial service flights when airport authorities reopen the airports.
Separate amicus, or Friend of the Court briefs, have been filed by AOPA and GAMA in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit over the conditions included in the settlement between the FAA and the city that will allow the airport to close in 2028. AOPA reports that in its brief it holds that the settlement would not allow the public to file complaints with the FAA concerning issues at the airport that the agency would be required to resolve "fairly and fully" in accordance with Part 16 of the FARs.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has closed both Houston Intercontinental and Houston Hobby airports through at least 28 August, following heavy rains from tropical storm Harvey, according to Flight Global. Houston Intercontinental, a major hub for United Airlines, is closed until at least noon local time on Monday, 28 August, and Houston Hobby, a large base for Southwest Airlines, until at least 08:00 local time on Wednesday, 30 August, the FAA says on its website.
Southwest Airlines airlifted around 500 of its customers out of closed Houston Hobby Airport Sunday, according to airline and US government sources with knowledge of the operation. The Southwest customers were stranded inside the airport when the FAA closed it earlier Sunday morning.
