FAA refuses to regulate airline seating, says tight rows are safe for evacuations

WASHINGTON In response to a federal appeals court case, the Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that it doesn't need to regulate airline seating because evacuation tests prove there is enough room to maneuver, despite consumer complaints about cramped quarters. The group FlyersRights.org challenged the FAA at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit over concerns that tighter seating with larger passengers could prevent evacuations within the goal of 90 seconds.

Two dead, one teen saved after plane from Houston crashes near Detroit

Bystanders rescued a 17-year-old but couldn't reach two other passengers of a small plane from Houston that crashed Sunday evening in Detroit, WJBK-TV reported . The pilot of the Cessna 210 reported low fuel and a landing-gear problem shortly before striking a power line and a tree, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford.

Hot air balloon hits power lines, catches fire, crashes in lake

Two fisherman rescued the pilot of a hot air balloon that hit power lines, caught on fire and crashed in a Livingston County lake at a balloon festival Sunday, according to TV news reports, festival organizers and the Federal Aviation Administration. No one was hurt during the morning incident at the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest in Howell.
