Cubs get RHP Alec Mills from Royals for OF Donnie Dewees

Mills was designated for assignment earlier Wednesday after the Royals signed free agent pitcher Jason Hammel, who played last season for the World Series champion Cubs. The 25-year-old Mills made his major league debut last year, going 0-0 in three games and giving up five runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Brandon Washington was fired Saturday after school officials learned he had been arrested earlier in the day on a misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in a jail and a $2,000 fine.

Manawatu swim spots compete for spruce up

Horizons Regional Council has selected 10 swim spots in Manawatu and surrounding regions and put them up for public vote. On Wednesday, Palmerston North’s Waitoetoe Park had 20 per cent of the votes, edged out by Mosquito Point in Whanganui, which had 29 per cent.
