Pope’s plea to help migrants

Pope Francis has described migrants and refugees as the world's "weakest and most needy", using his traditional New Year's address to "give voice" to people he has urged leaders to do more to help. Francis reminded some 40,000 people who gathered in St Peter's Square at the Vatican on Monday that he had chosen the plight of migrants and refugees as the theme for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Peace, which is celebrated on January 1. "For this peace, to which everyone has a right, many of them are willing to risk their lives in a journey which is often long and dangerous, they are willing to face strain and suffering."

2017 was a year of chaos, division and disruption in national politics

President Donald Trump delivers his inaugural address after being sworn in as the 45th president of the United States in front of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 20. If Democrats do well in the 2018 midterm elections, it won't be because of the Trump tax cuts. Democrats' hyperbole notwithstanding, voters are not going to vote against Republicans for putting more money in their pockets.

A letter writer suggested Americans will vote a straight Democratic ticket. Why would anyone want to go back to rampant illegal immigration, policies that make us less secure in regards to terrorism, an ineffective foreign policy that did nothing to stop our enemies from becoming armed with nuclear weapons, a stagnant economy, and an administration that sided with anti-police hate groups? Macron gets tough as France struggles to deal with migrants

That won't likely happen, and Macron's government is now tightening the screws: ramping up expulsions, raising pressure on economic migrants and allowing divisive ID checks in emergency shelters. Critics contend that Macron's increasingly tough policy on migrants - though wrapped in a cloak of goodwill - contradicts his image as a humanist who defeated an anti-immigrant populist for the presidency, and has crossed a line passed by no other president in the land that prides itself as the cradle of human rights.

Born in Nogales, Mexico, Marco Antonio Estrada was raised just north of the U.S. border, giving him a unique perspective on issues related to it and strong opinions about treatment of immigrants. Pointedly, the white-haired, 74-year-old Spanish-speaker has said he's "not a fan" of President Donald Trump, his proposed border wall or his hardline immigration policies.
