No Time to Die review: Daniel Craig dispatches James Bond with panache, rage – and cuddles

The long-awaited 25th outing for Ian Fleming’s superspy is a weird and self-aware epic with audacious surprises up its sleeve

The standard bearer of British soft power is back, in a film yanked from cinemas back in the time of the toilet roll shortage, based on a literary character conceived when sugar and meat rationing was still in force, and now emerging in cinemas as Britons are fighting for petrol in the forecourts.

Bond, like Norma Desmond, is once again ready for his closeup – and Daniel Craig once again shows us his handsome-Shrek face and the lovable bat ears, flecked with the scars of yesterday’s punch-up, the lips as ever pursed in determination or disgust.

Radical, angry, creative: British women lead a screen revolution

The Golden Globe nominations prove that the industry is in the throes of a sea change for female writers and directors

Corks popped across the film industry when three female directors made history by getting Golden Globe nominations last week. Alongside Regina King and Chloé Zhao was British newcomer Emerald Fennell, until now best known as Camilla in The Crown and for stepping into Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s shoes as show runner on Killing Eve. Her alarming feminist thriller, Promising Young Woman, picked up a clutch of coveted nominations.

“When those directors’ names were announced I ran around the room screaming,” said Jessica Hobbs, one of the directors on The Crown. “I messaged Emerald who couldn’t believe it. I told her I knew it was coming.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge: I was not hired for Bond because of my gender

Fleabag creator says she was never told 007 script role was to help with female characters

Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be only the second woman ever credited on a Bond movie script but she has insisted gender was not the reason she was hired.

Emmys 2019: Fleabag and Game of Thrones win big at Brit-dominated awards

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s comedy was the surprise victor while the final season of HBO’s fantasy drama picked up the most Emmy awards

It was a British invasion at the 71st Emmy awards, with Game of Thrones taking home the prize for best drama and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag sweeping most of the comedy awards in a night that saw numerous nods to stars from across the pond.

The biggest question heading into the night was whether Emmy voters would reward perennial juggernaut Game of Thrones for its divisive final season. The show was nominated for 32 awards – the most for any single season of television ever – and had already won 10 Creative Arts Emmys last week. Game of Thrones took home the night’s final prize for outstanding drama series and a best supporting actor nod for American star Peter Dinklage – bringing its total to 12 awards and breaking its own 2015 record for the most awards given to a series – but was otherwise shut out of the telecast.
