Schumer: FDA must reverse decision delaying e-cig regulation

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on the federal government to reverse a recent decision to delay the regulation of e-cigarettes. The New York Democrat said Sunday that the Food and Drug Administration should reconsider its decision announced earlier this year to put regulating electronic cigarettes on hold.

USDA sets new labeling disclosures for bio-engineered foods

Results from the USDA study, conducted by Deloitte, show that most consumers should be able to access bioengineering food disclosure information from a digital link on a package but that access is not foolproof. The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Law-signed into law on July 29, 2017-directs the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop regulations and standards to create mandatory disclosure requirements for bio-engineered foods by July 2018.

FDA delays some safety requirements for produce under FSMA to make them less complicated, costly

FDA is pushing back the compliance dates for most agricultural water testing standards outlined in the Food Safety Modernization Act's Produce Safety Rule to "simplify our approach to make compliance less burdensome and less costly, while still being protective of public health," the agency's commissioner announced Sept. 12. Speaking to attendees at the annual conference for the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture in New Orleans, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb recognized that "agricultural water can be a major conduit of the pathogens that contaminate produce," such as those that lead 2006 E. coli outbreak in bagged spinach that sickened 200 people nationwide and killed three.

FDA Recalls Nearly 500,000 Pacemakers Due To Hacking Risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled approximately 465,000 pacemakers this week after concerns started to grow over the devices vulnerability to hacking. The recall, announced on Tuesday , is not intended to remove the pacemakers as that would be not only invasive but would also put the patient at serious risk since medical procedures involving pacemakers are often complex; rather, the manufacturer created a new firmware update that medical professionals can apply to the patient.

US senators call on FDA to ban sale of menthol cigarettes

U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is calling for a ban on menthol cigarettes, arguing that tobacco companies disproportionately target African-Americans when they market and promote the cigarettes. The Massachusetts Democrat is leading a group of fellow senators in calling on the Food and Drug Administration to prohibit the cigarettes, noting that African-Americans suffer the greatest burden of tobacco-related mortality of any ethnic or racial group in the U.S. The letter to the FDA sent earlier this week was also signed by fellow Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren, of Massachusetts, Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, of Rhode Island, and Richard Blumenthal, of Connecticut.
