Officials in three states urged some 2 million people to head to safer ground as the most powerful storm to threaten the Atlantic coast in more than a decade continued on its path toward the U.S. at about 10 mph, packing 125 mph winds. Some 8 million Florida residents scrambled to make last-minute preparations as the deadly storm was expected to strengthen to a Category 4 hurricane with 145 mph winds before approaching the state on Thursday night.
The commander of U.S. forces in the Caribbean says nine U.S. military helicopters are being sent to Haiti in response to the government's request for help with damage from Hurricane Matthew. Adm. Kurt Tidd told reporters at the Pentagon on Wednesday that the helicopters are to arrive in Haiti on Thursday, weather permitting, by way of the Grand Cayman Islands and Jamaica.

Hurricane Matthew, a dangerous storm whose top sustained winds have sometimes reached 160 miles per hour, is churning through the Caribbean, with Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and the Bahamas in its path. Torrential rains are expected, with 25 inches-possibly up to 40 in places-predicted for southern Haiti.
