While Democrats and Republicans often are at odds at the state Capitol, members of the Senate and House of Delegates from both sides of the aisle fought for the same cause at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. Adding to the night’s light-hearted feel, the legislators were joined by former NBA center Ben Wallace, NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler and former VCU Ram and second round NBA draft pick Calvin Duncan.

House and Senate Republicans gathering Wednesday in Philadelphia for their three-day issues retreat will get a pep talk from NFL great Peyton Manning, hear from British Prime Minister Theresa May, and jam to music from ’90s band White Ford Bronco. The newly sworn-in president is slated to address lawmakers during lunch Thursday as Republicans – now in full control of government – try to plot out their 2017 legislative agenda on such issues as ObamaCare, tax reform, border security and infrastructure.

Serena Williams reached her 10th consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, and kept her bid alive for a record 23rd major title, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Johanna Konta at the Australian Open on Wednesday. Her opponent in the semifinals, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who beat fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, had a much longer wait to get back to this stage at a major – nearly 18 years.

Clippers’ Blake Griffin feels fine after first game since surgery

It wasn’t a bombshell announcement that Blake Griffin was going to be in the starting lineup Tuesday against the 76ers. For weeks, the game seemed like a logical return date for the Clippers’ star forward who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Dec. 20. Griffin slammed home a tip-in dunk and looked like he was moving fine in the Clippers’ 121-110 loss to Philadelphia, a positive sign after his lateral movement and attacking were limited by knee pain and stiffness in December prior to the surgery.

The most decorated athlete on Olympic history made quite the entrance on Tuesday night, as Michael Phelps arrived at Parkview Field in a helicopter, landing on the outfield grass. Phelps, and his longtime coach Bob Bowman stopped by for an event with Master Spas, a local company Phelps has worked with since 2010.

Blackhawks lose as Lightning rallies in 3rd

CHICAGO – Tyler Johnson scored two goals 30 seconds apart early in the third period, leading the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Tuesday night to end a three-game slide. Brian Boyle had a goal and an assist, and Nikita Nesterov and Nikita Kucherov also scored for the Lightning, who broke loose for three goals in a 3:57 span of the third to erase a 2-1 deficit.

Warsofsky added to All-Star Classic roster

Penguins defenseman David Warsofsky was named to the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic’s Atlantic Division squad Tuesday. Warsofsky, who has 29 points in 27 games this season, replaces rookie Jake Guentzel, who is in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
