Baseball, Indians working on solution to Wahoo logo

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has discussed a possible solution to the club’s divisive Chief Wahoo logo with Indians owner Paul Dolan. Manfred and Dolan have had multiple meetings on the touchy subject, including one on Friday that included Indians minority owner John Sherman, before the team announced it will host the 2019 All-Stare Game at Progressive Field.

Legacy of Kenny Washington, first black player to sign with NFL team, honored Saturday

The late Kenny Washington, who in 1946 became the first African American to sign a contract with an NFL team, will be honored at a ceremony Saturday in Houston. The Black Heritage Society will recognize the legacy and contributions of Washington at its Mountaintop Awards Luncheon starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Downtown Aquarium, 410 Bagby St. Members of Washington’s family, the Kenny Washington Stadium Foundation, the NFL Ex-Players Association and the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee will be in attendance.

Helton joins baseball staff at Tennessee

Former Rockies star Todd Helton has returned to his roots by joining the baseball staff at the University of Tennessee, where he will serve as director of player development, the school announced on Friday in a press release. Helton, in a volunteer position with the Volunteers, “will be responsible for maintaining alumni relations, assisting with on-campus recruiting, collaborating with UT’s coaching staff and helping Tennessee’s current players make informed decisions about pursuing professional baseball careers,” the UT announcement said.

This week, the North County Battalion, an adult soccer team established in 2015, announced a team rebranding to the “SoCal Surf,” and a new home venue in downtown Carlsbad. Matches in the 2017 spring season will now be played in the Army & Navy Academy’s Maffucci Field, at the western edge of Carlsbad Village, just a couple blocks away from pubs, bars and restaurants.

It was hoped that new investment would be found ahead of the upcoming campaign which gets under way in Melbourne on March 26. But Manor’s employees were sent home on Friday and will be redundant as of next week after Just Racing Services – the team’s operating company – closed its doors.
