Tran’s GOP win douses Democrats’ firepower

The recent election of Republican Dean Tran of Fitchburg to the Massachusetts state Senate was an embarrassing rebuke to the state's top Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Despite their opposition, Tran defeated Democrat Susan Chalifoux Zephir, a Leominster city councilor who had the support of the state's Democrat Party hierarchy, as well as Charlene DiCalogero of Berlin an unenrolled candidate Claire Freda.

In 3rd, a majority minority campaign

Niki Tsongas was first elected in 2007, breaking a decades-long streak of male dominance in the state's congressional delegation. No woman had represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House or Senate for 25 years, since Rep. Margaret Heckler had been defeated.

Koh raises $805,000 in one month in bid for 3rd District seat

The former Boston mayoral chief of staff who announced plans to run in the 3rd Congressional District in 2018 said he has raised more than $805,000 in September for the campaign. With the funds in place, Democrat Daniel Koh announced in a press release Wednesday that his official campaign announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

It was nice to see U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan in Massachusetts last Thursday, visiting with the owners and workers at the New Balance factory in Lawrence. Any high-ranking Republican leader with the guts to come to one of the bluest states in the nation is clearly a true American patriot.

Tsongas pushes bill to protect scientific work from political pressure

Congresswoman Niki Tsongas is pushing for legislation she says will help insulate government-directed scientific research from the influence of political pressure and special interests. The Lowell Democrat said the bill would require federal agencies that conduct or fund scientific research to develop policies aimed at guaranteeing their research is conducted and published without undue influence, censorship or distortion.

House votes to block Obama rules on public lands, education

The Republican-controlled House voted Tuesday to overturn Obama-era rules on the environment and education as GOP lawmakers seek to reverse years of what they see as excessive government regulation during the past eight years of a Democratic president. The House voted, 234-186, to repeal a rule that requires federal land managers to consider climate change and other long-term effects of proposed development on public lands.

Maine congressional delegation visits New Balance factory

The director of manufacturing at New Balance says a "Made-in-USA" provision for athletic footwear for military recruits could mean an additional 250,000 sneakers a year. Brendan Melley touted the figure Wednesday as three members of Maine's congressional delegation visited a New Balance factory in Skowhegan, the Morning Sentinel reported.

Probe urged over alleged drug use at Bedford, Lowell VA sites

Elected officials and veterans advocates said Tuesday that they were deeply disturbed by allegations that employees at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford may be involved in selling drugs to patients. On Sunday, The Sun reported that the Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs was investigating an alleged drug-dealing ring at the hospital that includes employees and patients and may be linked to at least two overdose deaths in VA facilities.

Such was the case Thursday night, when a host of the city's top political, cultural and educational leaders celebrated a key milestone in the life of the Tsongas Industrial History Center, which grew out of the Lowell National Historical Park, Lowell School Department and UMass Lowell "partnership" 25 years ago. Reminiscing at the anniversary event, City Councilor William Samaras paid tribute to two men in launching the center: the late U.S. Sen. Paul Tsongas and the late school Superintendent Patrick Mogan.

U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, D-Lowell, and her Republican challenger, Ann Wofford, will square off in a debate at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, at the Devens Common Center. New Balance's long battle with the federal government to supply the military with its athletic shoes cleared a major hurdle early Tuesday afternoon. The Senate passed the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act on an 85-13 vote.

New Balance Close to Win in Buy-America Foot Race for Military

New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. is close to winning an almost decade-long marathon: A buy-American provision in the massive defense policy bill the Senate will debate this week could force the Pentagon to purchase the company's sneakers for new military recruits. Currently, the Pentagon issues about $15 million in vouchers a year, covering 225,000 to 250,000 pairs of athletic shoes, New Balance estimates.
