Joan Ethel Norvill Harper was born on Oct. 30, 1935, in Liverpool, England, where she lived until shortly after she married. As a student, she earned an academic scholarship to attend the Belvedere School for Girls in Liverpool from which she graduated with High Honors.

A Fresh Bailout Deal for Greece

Greece and its international creditors have struck a deal that would allow the country to receive bailout funds in exchange for more cuts to government pensions and higher taxes. Under the terms of the agreement, Greece will, among other things, cut pensions in 2019 and reduce the amount at which taxes must be paid in 2020 in order to save 2 percent of gross domestic product.

Corker Votes To Advance Legislation Deterring Sanctuary Cities

Senator Bob Corker issued the following statement Wednesday after voting to advance the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act and the Establishing Mandatory Minimums for Illegal Reentry Act , which is known as "Kate's Law." The two bills would withhold certain federal funds from cities and counties that prevent local law enforcement officials from cooperating with federal immigration authorities and impose mandatory prison terms for illegal immigrants convicted of major felonies or who have been deported but repeatedly enter the country illegally, respectively.
