He was born in Ashland to Jack Richard and Betty Jane Manion, and had been a resident of Ashland all of his life. He enjoyed reading about geology, listening to rock and roll — the Rolling Stones and Beatles were his favorite groups — and watching all of the Cleveland sports teams, especially the Cleveland Browns.
