‘I knew nothing’: the Warsaw ghetto boy who found his family at 83

A DNA test has helped Shalom Koray find relatives in the US after escaping the Holocaust in a rucksack at the age of two

In 1943, a two-year-old boy found wandering the streets of the Warsaw ghetto at the height of the Jewish uprising was smuggled out in a rucksack, probably by a police officer.

The identity of the child could not be known. There was no one to attest even to a first name. His early life would be spent hidden away in orphanages, still not safe from antisemitic persecution, and without any real understanding of what it was to have a parent.

‘I took a DNA test and found a new family’: the drama and joy of meeting long-lost relatives

After years of searching, DNA tests, social media and old-fashioned tenacity have played crucial roles in reuniting fractured families. Here, six people tell their stories

I used to go by Larecia Whitehead, I changed my second name to Buford – my real father’s name – when a DNA test led us to each other after decades apart. For most of my childhood, Mum told me another guy was my father, a man I never knew and who left us when I could barely walk or talk. I was never convinced. Then, at 15, a girl in school recognised my then surname and introduced me to the man my mother always said was my dad. We looked nothing alike. He didn’t think I was his daughter either. Fastforward to me being 31, and I needed certainty. Once again I tracked down the man my mum said was my dad and asked him to do a DNA test. The results came back: there was a 0% chance we were related. I’d been right all along.

She sees anti-immigration politicians as hypocrites, so she launched ‘resistance genealogy’

On the morning after Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., broke a record for the longest filibuster in the history of the House of Representatives - an eight-hour defense of immigrants - a Baltimore amateur genealogist named Jennifer Mendelsohn sat in her home office and logged onto Ancestry.com to begin her own form of protest. "Let's see," she said, typing in the name of a Republican congressman whose anti-immigrant comments had been controversial.

Immigrant Ancestors Are Not An Argument For Open Borders

That's the name given to the work of liberal writer Jennifer Mendelsohn, who has spent a lot of time digging into the ancestry of those who have expressed support for reducing immigration. The purpose of such activity is to shame immigration hawks with the argument that their ancestors would not have been let into the country under President Trump's proposals.

Elizabeth Warren’s ‘Pocahontas’ Controversy

Is Sen. Elizabeth Warren part Native American? Is that how she got jobs as a professor at Ivy League law schools? Warren has not proved that she is part Native American, and no one has proved that she was ever hired because of her alleged racial background. What are the facts regarding Elizabeth Warren's Native American heritage and did she use it to further her career? No proof has emerged that confirms that Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is, as she has claimed, part Native American.
