The two candidates for outgoing state Rep. David Harris' 53rd House District seat have each tried to deflect criticism that, if elected, they'd be controlled by Springfield insiders. For first-time candidate Eddie Corrigan, 29, of Arlington Heights, that's meant fending off campaign mailers from Democratic opponent Mark Walker calling Corrigan "a political operative who was hand-picked by his party bosses to protect the status quo."

West Virginia's Attorney General Patrick Morrisey on Tuesday proposed a five-point strategy to rein in opioids abuse in his hard-hit corner of Appalachia, from an "enforcement surge" of 150 state troopers to limiting certain fills of pain pills to just three days. The legislative package would shield prescribers who decline to prescribe opioids - so doctors don't put economic incentives over safe care - tighten up prescribing practices under the state Medicaid program and force doctors to crosscheck a prescribing database every time they write a script for opioids, instead of just once a year.
Democrats want to take back at least one chamber of Congress this year, and the House of Representatives may be their best shot. The party needs to win 24 seats to make that happen and, as seen in the races below, Democrats are counting on swing districts, those held by retiring or resigned Republicans, districts won by Hillary Clinton in 2016, and the female candidates running in record numbers this year.

Roskam, a Wheaton Republican, chairs the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax Policy and was one of the authors of the plan.
Fresh off a blistering loss over health care, many lawmakers are cautiously optimistic their party can be more successful in overhauling the U.S. tax code, a system they say is seriously lacking in popularity and in dire need of change. Fewer than 24 hours after Republicans were forced to pull the plug on their second effort to repeal and replace Obamacare, the party released a framework, held a bicameral news conference and discussed details about how they plan to revamp the tax code.
