A collection of more than 7,000 letters will form a publicly accessible digital archive that offers a window to the past
In the week that Ireland turns everything green and celebrates its diaspora, a new online archive has given voice to the human cost paid by generations of emigrants.
More than 7,000 letters from emigrants to North America spanning four centuries have been collected and digitised, giving poignant insight into the homesickness, tribulations, and occasional triumphs, of those who crossed the Atlantic.
It's that time of year again when we celebrate all things Irish but there is a lot more to Irish achievement than shamrocks, Guinness and Jedward. Ireland has been making a positive impact around the globe for centuries and there's no better time to celebrate some of those real Irish accomplishments than just ahead of St Patrick's Day.
"Since you took office, Mr. President, 59 Irish companies have made new investments in this country. So we are bringing jobs and good jobs to America," Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said.
It may be poor timing to pen this editorial in advance of what could be this winter's worst snow storm yet less than a week from the first official day of spring, no less.
