Does Trump’s new “extreme vetting” center duplicate other efforts?

"Extreme vetting" was a frequent campaign promise of President Donald Trump's, and within days of taking office he ordered broad restrictions on travelers from many Muslim-majority countries, measures he deemed necessary until such a system was in place. Trump directed Homeland Security officials to edify his ideas, and in February the White House announced the creation of a National Vetting Center, or NVC, that would bring unprecedented rigor to screening foreigners.

Where are the conservatives we need?

But in a well-ordered democratic system, those who fight on behalf of competing parties, interests and ideas can usually find some room for mutual esteem and even occasionally try to profit intellectually from each other. It's when politics becomes unhinged that we squander the gift of social learning through reasoned argument.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved CIA Director Mike Pompeo as secretary of State on party lines Monday after a Republican holdout changed his mind at the last minute, avoiding an embarrassing defeat for President Donald Trump. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky had vowed to oppose Pompeo, but Paul tweeted shortly before the vote that after speaking repeatedly to the nominee and Trump he was convinced Pompeo now agreed with the president that "the Iraq war was a mistake and it is time to leave Afghanistan," two of the congressman's key concerns.
