Agreement to phase out fossil fuels would be huge for humanity, says Gore

Exclusive: former US vice-president and climate activist says phase-out can be only measure of success for Cop28

An agreement by countries to phase out fossil fuels would be “one of the most significant events in the history of humanity”, according to Al Gore, amid wrangling by governments at Cop28.

It would be a “welcome surprise” if world leaders agreed at the climate talks to call for an end to fossil fuels, but such a declaration would have “enormous impact” upon the world, Gore told the Guardian at the gathering in the United Arab Emirates.

Rishi Sunak accused of hypocrisy after backing phase-out of fossil fuels at Cop28

UK prime minister attacked for inconsistency after allowing more gas and oil exploration in the North Sea

Rishi Sunak has been accused of hypocrisy on the international stage after pushing for a phase-out of fossil fuels at the UN Cop28 climate summit in Dubai – weeks after backing more oil and gas exploration in the North Sea.

The prime minister’s lack of “consistency” over climate policy was ridiculed by several senior Conservatives, as well as the former US vice president Al Gore, while members of other international delegations said the UK’s incoherent approach meant it was no longer a global leader on climate issues.

Climate-focused reform of World Bank could be done in a year, says Al Gore

Former US vice-president says bank should refocus its spending and end its role in ‘fossil fuel colonialism’

Fundamental reform of the World Bank could be completed within a year, to refocus its spending on the climate crisis and end its contribution to “fossil fuel colonialism”, according to the former US vice-president Al Gore.

“I don’t know why it need take longer than a year,” said Gore, a longtime campaigner on the climate crisis since leaving politics, in an interview with the Guardian at the Cop27 UN climate summit. “We have an emergency on our hands.”

Hillary Says Bill Should ‘Absolutely Not’ Have Resigned Over Monica

Why are we still hearing from Hillary Clinton? She hasn't held any political position of note in half a decade, and in 2016, she was pummeled by Donald Trump. Why do I say "pummeled"? Well, it's true that DT didn't win by a landslide; but when you've been in politics for years, and a guy known for having a gold toilet swoops in out of nowhere and bests you, you're doing some things really, really, really, really wrong.

Optimism trumps despair, division

Mayors, governors, entrepreneurs, CEOs, investors and celebrities delivered a double-edged message Friday at the close of a climate summit in San Francisco: global warming is making the planet unliveable -- but we know how to fix it. "We are using the sky as an open sewer, it's insane," former US vice president Al Gore told the conference, noting that humanity belches 110 million tons of heat-trapping pollution into the atmosphere every day.

Gov. a Moonbeama says California to launch climate satellite

California Gov. Jerry Brown said Friday that the state plans to launch its "own damn satellite" into orbit to battle climate change. The man the late Chicago columnist Mike Royko famously dubbed "Gov. Moonbeam" made the announcement at the conclusion of a two-day climate summit he organized in San Francisco.

Al Gore ties hurricanes, California wildfires to climate change in San Francisco summit appearance

As Hurricane Florence pounded Carolina beaches and parts of California continue to burn, former Vice President Al Gore on Friday said that many of the natural disasters affecting the world this year have been made worse by climate change, but it isn't too late to limit its effects. "Every night on the television news is like a nature hike through the Book of Revelation," Gore said at the Global Climate Action Summit, an international meeting of 4,500 scientists, political leaders, activists and business executives at the Moscone Center.

If Bill Clinton Had Taken The High Road, Would The Road Be Different For Trump And Republicans?

In an alternate universe in which Bill Clinton resigns rather than outlast impeachment, his wife perhaps doesn't run -- and there might not be a President Trump. Moreover, Republicans might find it tougher to dismiss a sex-related impeachment charge.

Global warming is not peoplea s most pressing concern

In a recent interview with the Vatican News service, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore again claimed "the climate crisis is now the biggest existential challenge humanity has ever faced." Gore boasted, "I have been fortunate to be able to pour every ounce of energy I have into efforts to contribute to the solution to his crisis."

The names appear on a list of documents that special counsel Robert Mueller could show to the jury to be selected this week in Alexandria, Va.

The Unsinkable Scott Pruitt?

Conservatives crave sticking their middle fingers in the faces of their real or perceived ideological adversaries. To that end, one can't help wondering if the reason Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt-surely among the top five names on any list of the most corrupt Cabinet members in United States history-still has a job is because Trump knows that Pruitt's continued presence in his position serves as a constant irritant to progressives.

Ahead of November election, old voting machines stir concerns among U.S. officials

U.S. election officials responsible for managing more than a dozen close races this November share a fear: Outdated voting machines in their districts could undermine confidence in election results that will determine which party controls the U.S. Congress. In 14 of the 40 most competitive races, Americans will cast ballots on voting machines that do not provide a paper trail to audit voters' intentions if a close election is questioned, according to a Reuters analysis of data from six states and the Verified Voting Foundation, a non-political group concerned about verifiable elections.
