Fifty arrested at City airport in London, including a former Paralympian who climbed on top of a BA aircraft

More than 1,000 people have been arrested since the start of Extinction Rebellion’s protests this week in London, including 50 who were detained at City airport.

Those arrested at the airport on Thursday included James Brown, a partially-sighted former Paralympian who climbed on top of a British Airways aircraft, while another man, who boarded a flight to Dublin and stood up to speak about the effects of the climate crisis, was held for failing to comply with the orders of a captain.

Three men have been charged over a late-night assault on Guardian journalist Owen Jones outside a pub in Islington, north London.

The Met police said James Healy, 39, from Portsmouth; Liam Tracey, 34, from Camden, London; and Charlie Ambrose, 29, from Brighton, had been charged with actual bodily harm and affray.

Two men have died in a fire at a working men’s club in Lancashire, police have said.

They were rescued from the fire at the Gordon working men’s club in Morecambe, but died a short time later. Lancashire police said they were in the process of contacting next of kin.

An investigation is taking place after a raft on a Center Parcs ride flipped over, injuring a man and two children.

The holiday company apologised after the man and his nephew, 12, and niece, 13, were hurt on the Tropical Cyclone ride at a site in Longleat, Wiltshire, on 19 August.
