Maine Food Sovereignty Bends but Doesn’t Break After USDA Threats

This past June, Maine legislators passed a law, An Act to Recognize Local Control Regarding Food Systems , which allows cities and towns in the state to adopt laws permitting farmers and other food producers within their borders to engage in a host of direct-to-consumer food sales. The law, intended to bolster local food economies in the state, allows Maine municipalities to "regulate by ordinance local food systems," and requires the state, in turn, to "recognize such ordinances."

Paul Gosar's brother called him "an embarrassment" to the family on Friday, following up on a published letter by seven siblings blasting the Arizona Congressman for his conspiracy theories. His siblings had their blistering letter published in the Kingman Daily Miner on October 24, criticizing the Prescott congressman for his debunked theories about August's white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

VA: Secret waiting list delayed care for 87 veterans in 2017

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs officials say an unauthorized, secret waiting list for psychotherapy appointments at Omaha's VA hospital delayed care for 87 veterans this year. Letters addressed to Iowa Sens. Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley and Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse - all Republicans - blamed the unauthorized list on "training deficiencies" involving the hospital's medical support assistants, the Omaha World-Herald reported Saturday.

Markey joins other pols seeking quick probe of Bedford VA death

US Senator Edward Markey Tuesday joined the chorus of elected officials calling on the Veterans Affairs secretary to speed up the investigation into the death of a Vietnam veteran who died at the Bedford VA while a nurse's aide was allegedly playing games on her computer. Markey asked Shulkin to "rectify" the systemic problems at Bedford and other VA facilities around the country to ensure that health care workers are adequately trained and supervised.

More than 1 Billion in Federal Food Disaster Food Assistance Distributed

The Florida Department of Children and Families today released updates on the federal Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program operations in Florida. To date, in response to Hurricane Irma, DCF has distributed more than $1 billion in federal disaster food assistance through DSNAP, supplemental benefits, and replacements for regular SNAP customers.
