The man suspected of holding a British backpacker captive and repeatedly raping and beating her during a two-month ordeal has been named. Queensland’s Department of Justice identified Marcus Martin, 22, as the man charged with kidnapping the UK tourist, also 22. The woman, who was treated in hospital for facial fractures, faces a wait to return to the UK due to her passport allegedly being damaged by the suspect.

Abortion reform in Queensland has officially failed, for now, with independent member for Cairns Rob Pyne due to withdraw his bills. The government has referred the current laws in relation to the termination of pregnancy to the Queensland Law Reform Commission for its advice.
Diver mauled by shark north of Australia to undergo surgery
A diver who was mauled by a 4-meter bull shark near the Great Barrier Reef was flown in stable condition to an Australian hospital for microsurgery to an arm, a paramedic said Sunday. The 55-year-old man had been free diving with friends in the Torres Strait from a boat chartered from the Queensland state city of Cairns when the shark attacked on Saturday afternoon, paramedic David Cameron said.
Python makes meal of wallaby in horse paddock near Cairns
A 3-metre scrub python has made a meal out of a wallaby in far north Queensland on New Year’s Day – the second such event recorded in the area in recent weeks. Bernie Worlsfold came across the python mid-feed about 5:00pm on Sunday, while attending to the horses on the Kuranda property where he lives.
