Some 9.3 million travellers are expected to use the airports at Larnaca and Paphos this year, a 3.6% increase on 2016, which had in turn been a record-breaking year. Last year saw an 18% increase, translating to 1.37 million passengers using the airports, an 18% rise in comparison to 2015.

Tourism in the north of Cyprus stagnates

A report on the average occupancy percentage of tourist resorts for 2016 shows the average percentage of the occupancy of tourist resorts reached 48.6%, recording a drop of 0.4% from 2015. The data was released in a report issued by the Turkish Cypriot tourism planning office.

A 57-year-old is being treated in the Nicosia General Hospital Intensive Care Unit for severe respiratory problems after attempting to extinguish a fire that had broken out at a church in Pera Chorio. Doctors have described his condition as critical.

Notorious former convict Yiouroukis has died

Andreas Aristodemou, better known as Yiouroukis, has died, almost five years after being released from Nicosia Central Prisons after serving the longest sentence for a Cyprus inmate. He served 26 years in prison between February 1987 and June 5, 2012 after being convicted of the murders of artist’s agent Artin in 1986, and of Mary Teloni in 1987.

I was struck this week by the comments of Israeli dancer and choreographer, Ido Tadmor, about his participation in the Pafos2017 opening ceremony which takes place on Saturday night. We were talking about his collaboration in the ceremony and, while doing so, he spoke about how he sees the European Culture Capital title that Paphos is holding for the duration of 2017 as a ‘rebirth’ for the town in dark times.

Cypriot activists march against Trump’s policies

Local activist groups staged a protest on Friday outside the American Embassy in Nicosia, against policies that threaten human rights and diversity in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidency. The demonstration was carried out in solidarity with other women’s marches in the US and around the world, protesting policies that Trump said he would follow as President, such as building a wall to keep migrants from Mexico away.

A well-organised and supervised popular attraction, highlighting the concept of “graffiti as art”, themed “Street Life Festival”, will celebrate 10 years on May 6, 9am-7pm, in Saripolou and Athinon Streets Limassol. Fight to restore DST goes on

Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ union boss Sener Elcil said he will continue to fight until the re-introduction of Daylight Saving Time and three senior members of the coalition are dismissed. “The separatist political regime created by Turkey in the north of our island is regulated by commands coming from Turkey,” Elcil told the Cyprus Weekly.

Saving ancient treasures

The Turkish Cypriot tourism office and the local council of Trikomo have signed an agreement to open an archaeology museum in the town, as part of a drive to ensure every town has a museum. Tourism office head, Fikri Ataoglu, and the leader of the local council, Hasan Sadikoglu, believe the museum will draw visitors to the town and allow them to see the historical artefacts of the island.

Four cultural preservation projects in Paphos district, aimed at protecting the island’s common cultural heritage, will start next year, following a series of conservation studies. At a press briefing and tour in Paphos, the UNDP-PFF outlined plans for structural and aesthetic restoration of a hamam and three mosques in and around Paphos.
