Chile’s President Says Cataclysmic Wildfires Are Largely Under Control
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet says wildfires that killed at least 11 people and caused more than $300 million in damage are mostly under control. “[These are] the worst wildfires that Chile has suffered in its history … [but] are now mostly under control,” Bachelet said over the weekend, according to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle .
U.S. Increases Firefighting Aid To Chile As More Than 70 Blazes Rage
The U.S. Embassy in Chile says it is sending an additional $740,000 for protective equipment and firefighting tools, as the country continues to battle more than 70 active wildfires that have killed at least 11 people in the past two weeks. The latest contribution, announced Tuesday , brings the total wildfire aid to Chile from the U.S. government to $840,000, including $100,000 promised last week after Chilean President Michele Bachelet declared a state of emergency.

A powerful earthquake shook southern Chile on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of deaths and only minor known damage. The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 7.6 and said it struck at 11:22 a.m. local time near the southern tip of Chiloe Island, about 25 miles south-southwest of Puerto Quello and at a depth of 22 miles .
