Russia, Ukraine Agree to Ceasefire in Eastern Ukraine

European powers are backing a new ceasefire agreement announced Saturday for embattled eastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists have been locked in conflict for three years. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the deal, set to begin Monday, was settled with input from German and French counterparts, and comes after two other internationally-brokered ceasefires have fizzled in a region where the fighting has only raised tensions between Russia and the West.

Laura Muir just misses out on 1000m world record but beats Europe’s best in Birmingham

THE repetitive laps of the playing fields at Kinross High School , which Laura Muir regularly undertook on cold wintry days, were largely solitary pursuits, the soundtrack provided by echoes from the playground or the gusts blowing inland and westwards from the North Sea. It would have required quite a leap of imagination to believe that, 10 years on, this unassuming pupil would be running to an accompaniment of a din of enthusiasm and a global television audience now primed to watch her excel.

Joe Root named Ben Stokes as his vice captain

Root prizes his deputy’s presence not just for his born match-winning ability with bat, ball and in the field – but because they have spent much of the past 15 years sharing a cricket field with one another, initially in opposition and increasingly as hugely familiar and trusted team-mates. For those reasons, Root had no hesitation nominating the mercurial all-rounder as his preferred vice-captain after he himself was offered the top job last weekend to succeed Alastair Cook – and happily, England and Wales Cricket Board director Andrew Strauss was of like mind too.

Graeme Macpherson: European football used to be an honour for…

NOT since the Grand Old Duke of York revealed his somewhat bewildering plan to march his 10,000 men up a hill and then back down again has so much effort been put in for so little reward as Scottish clubs trying to qualify for Europe. As we approach the 50th anniversary of having two of our representatives play in a continental final in the space of six days, what was once viewed as an integral component of our leading clubs’ fixture lists, and then latterly as a worthwhile reward for an honest season’s toil, is in danger of being considered more of a nuisance than a badge of honour.

Letter: Scotland’s NHS is meeting the challenges

I read with interest your article on NHS waiting times . Towards the end of last year I consulted my GP, who referred me to Stirling Community Hospital for an ultrasound examination, and I was given an appointment for January 9. Two days after that I again visited my GP to discuss the outcome of the ultrasound and was told I required to have an MRI scan at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert; that procedure took place on February 10. At all of these GP and hospital appointments I was seen on time and received courteous and professional attention in a calm atmosphere from all the health professionals concerned.

February 19, 2017: Culture of pettiness

Culture of pettiness I was pleased to read your February 16 editorial “Israel’s own Air Force One,” which relates to the culture of pettiness that has engulfed our otherwise proud country. Those of us who were privileged to watch and listen to our prime minister talking at the side of the president of the United States last week could not have been more proud that we have a statesman of international stature whose eloquence, diplomacy and sense of occasion are matched only by those of the legendary master of these same qualities, the late Abba Eban.
